Gender Roles in Christine Ebers Women and Alcohol in a...
Gender Roles in Christine Ebers Women and Alcohol in a Highland Mayan Town It is apparent from Christine Ebers research in her work, Women and Alcohol in a Highland Maya Town, that the gender roles and relations for men and women in the town of Chenalho have gone through somewhat dramatic changes since the 1960s and 1970s. They have gone from clearly defined roles for both men and women, to a more skewed framework that allows for a great deal of gray area. These roles have not only changed within the household and community, but also outside of them. The effects of these shifts in gender roles can be identified in relation to the Pedranos traditional belief structure, the influence of religion, and the use/misuse of alcohol inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Indeed, it is said that men and women are indispensable to each other. They are given duties upon marriage that are handed down from their parents that dictate their required role in the family and community. However, men have historically been able to manipulate and take advantage of the patriarcha l system. Until recently, that is. With the beginning of the 1980s came the introduction of a debt crisis. This put extraordinary financial strain on a community that prided itself on self-reliance and providing all that ones family needs through farming. However, with the added financial burden, farming as a sole means of survival was not a viable solution. Therefore, women were forced to take a much greater role as a provider for the family. They were able to take on this role through selling agricultural products, and making and selling weavings, pottery, and chichi. In addition to an increased provider role, women were also taking on many more duties around the house and with the children. Due to the reduced credit and skyrocketing prices, men were forced to spend more and more time away from home working on coffee, sugar cane, or cattle plantations. Women would have to go weeks at a time without the presence of her husband in the household. The increasing occurrences of this, led to a growing feeling of independence and resourcefulness among the women of the community. Men were

Essay on Stereotypes â⬠â⬠Example Essay Free Essays
StereoTypes ââ¬â Introduction Stereotypes are a part of our everyday life. We hear stereotypes every day and everywhere. Sometimes we can find ourselves in a situation where we make stereotypes for a large group of people. We will write a custom essay sample on Essay on Stereotypes ââ¬â ââ¬â Example Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Every person, young or old, is labelled with either positive or negative stereotypes. Stereotyping is a way that people group each other. Each group is called by name, that doesnt really fit to everyone in that specific group. Stereotypes affect peopleââ¬â¢s social lives, emotions, and how people interact with their environment. There are times that you are not so open to the idea of meeting new people, and making new friends. You donââ¬â¢t want to go outside, because we have put our own set of rules in this world. We know that we get criticized about what we wear every single day! We are criticized in which music we listen to, how we look like, how we act, and who we hang out with. We are also criticized on every other personal trait and imperfection we have. We have put the bar way up high, maybe too high for our potentials. Stereotype Essay ââ¬â What we really know? We cannot afford all the stereotyping that is going on between us. After we come and we say to people to just be who they are. If we say to a person that he or she is a hippie, just from the way they are dressed, that is just totally wrong. Hippie is someone who rejects the culture, not just the one who has long hair and wears beads. We are using the words in the wrong way. There are many people that have no friends, because they are tired of their critique. Leave everything behind and donââ¬â¢t let stereotypes ruin your social life. Stereotypes have an enormous impact of how we feel. That makes people have no motivation; therefore they wonââ¬â¢t have good performance at any level in their life. For instance if a kid is stereotyped as black and obese, how can these words make him feel good, so that he/she can move on to the next level This can create psychological pressure. Other people face stereotypes as a threat. For example there is a stereotype that says that women are bad drivers. It puts even more pressure on how they feel, not only being around people who are labelling them, but being around people that they trust. They will try to prove to them that this is just a stereotype and it does not exist. In addition, this occurs in situations where people worry for their performance and how they look like. Besides that people donââ¬â¢t want their poor performance to lead to negative stereotypes. To modify or extend this essay or to get pricing on a custom essay Contact Us Today Members of stereotyped groups worry of what they are doing, and this makes them stressed, because they think that they have to be perfect, in all aspects of their lives! People get tired of being criticized all the time. When there is no one able to close peopleââ¬â¢s mouths, they start to become isolated. In the same way they donââ¬â¢t talk, because they are afraid to say something wrong, so that they wonââ¬â¢t look silly. They are afraid of failure. For example, people seem surprised when they see men cry or being emotional. They think that men are not allowed to express their feelings, or men have no feelings at all. Men are not unconscious, they have feelings, but that is just a stereotype and a generalization from our society. It is easy to see that with are actions and sayings we are trying to kill emotions and thoughts! We should learn how to control our feelings and emotions, instead of letting stereotypes control them. In addition, your surroundings can be affected as well. If you had a bad day because someone just stereotyped you, when you go home or to your friends you are going to be really anxious. In addition you would probably get irritated or feel sad at the same time. You just go to your room or sit alone in a corner. When your loved ones see you like that they are not going to feel any better, because your emotions are now in control, and you just pass them around. In other words you broadcast your feelings to others. Furthermore there are times teachers question their students ââ¬Å"Did I create a good environment, so that you can be able to talk and share ideas with the rest of your class?â⬠Well, sometimes teachers cannot change this situation. The only people that can create a comfortable and happy atmosphere are us ââ¬â the students. They are many stereotypes going in and out of every classroom. Thatââ¬â¢s why sometimes students can be afraid to share ideas, because before they were stereotyped as nerds. These daysââ¬â¢ people are afraid to be themselves, because they fear other people. They donââ¬â¢t want people to think something bad for them. Secrets, thoughts, and ideas, are all held down. Stereotypes can be an obstacle as to how open you are with people and how you make people feel when you are with them! Conclusion Instead of focusing on all the mistakes of each person, we should start paying more attention of how unique each person is. Stereotype causes people to feel lonely and even sometimes depressed. Itââ¬â¢s also harmful for their environment and their social life. We should keep stereotypes out of the picture, even though sometimes we can be victims ourselves. Stop judging people before you even get to know them. 5 Simple Steps to Snag Book Endorsements from a Marketing MBA
5 Simple Steps to Snag Book Endorsements from a Marketing MBA 5 Simple Steps to Snag Book Endorsements from a Marketing MBA Growing you book sales isnt easy. In fact, youre probably doing it incorrectly already. This post will show you how to market your book for growth. But if you want to knowà all the ins-and-outs of self-publishing a book, including how to write, market, and publish your book within 90 dayswe highly recommend watching your free training first. How to get book endorsementsEndorsements are a very powerful form of social proof and trust-builder for potential readers of your book.Endorsements alone might not make your book a bestseller, but theyââ¬â¢ll give you an advantage over other books that donââ¬â¢t have them.I was able to leverage my endorsement by a top influencer to promote my book on social media, on my website, and even on webinars and speaking engagements. You could place endorsements or ââ¬Å"blurbsâ⬠on the back cover of your book, the praise sheet, or even the front cover, as you can see from my endorsement example below. But, how do you get top influencers to suppo rt your book? Here are five simple steps to get endorsements for your book.#1 Find the right influencersThe most powerful endorsements are those given by people who are well-known in your field. To select the right influencers, find out who your ideal readers admire. Post the question on targeted social media groups or ask them directly. Also, ask yourself what top influencers you follow and respect. Add their names to the list.Focus on quality over quantity, but if you donââ¬â¢t have enough names, search for bestselling books similar to yours and check out who endorsed them.Itââ¬â¢s important that the influencers have a style and values similar to yours. That way, your ideal reader will be likely to be attracted to them and be familiar with their work. How do you figure out the style and values of potential endorsers? Start by visiting the ââ¬Å"About Meâ⬠page on their website and pay attention to their branding and message. Then, visit their social media pages and focu s on the style of their posts and the content they share. Youââ¬â¢ll get a good idea of whether the personââ¬â¢s values and style might be a good match for you or not.#3 Deliver value firstBecause its much easier to get a yes from someone who has already received value from you, its important that you start planning your request for endorsements in advance. For blurbs by top influencers, you might need to start the outreach process several months ahead of the publication of your book.Regardless of where you are in your journey, thereââ¬â¢s always a way for you to bring value to the influencers and start a relationship with them.Something as simple as sending them a handwritten note about how much their message means to you, posting a video review of their book on Amazon, or recommending them on LinkedIn will help you stand out. Here are other examples of powerful ways to stand out: becoming an active member on the influencersââ¬â¢ social media groupsattending one of their conferencesjoining one of their paid programsYou should do this because you truly enjoy their message and not just because youre seeking endorsements. Your true intentions will come through in your communications and behaviors.Avoid going straight to the ask without having taken the time to deliver value first.#4 Prepare to askBefore you reach out to potential endorsers, do everything you can to make it as easy as possible for them to say yes.Prepare well in advance so you can find the best opportunities to ask for the endorsement, and give yourself enough time to get through gatekeepers. For example, if the influencer will be speaking at an event in your town, you could grab a ticket and introduce yourself. However, local events arenââ¬â¢t your only choice. One of my friends was interested in building a relationship with an influencer who would be speaking three thousand miles away. But that didnt stop her. By following the influencer on Instagram, she learned that this person l oved brownies and would be attending the event with her husband. My friend ordered a dozen brownies to be delivered to the event with a customized note that read, ââ¬Å"Best wishes during your presentation. Hope you and your husband enjoy these treats!â⬠That was the start of their friendship. As part of your preparation, write a sample endorsement for each influencer. Blurs usually hover around 50 words (never more than 100). If you know their work well, you will be able to create blurbs that closely match their writing voice. #5 Ask for the endorsementIt might feel nerve-wracking to ask, but never wrong. If youre hesitant, it might be too soon in the relationship, especially when it comes to top influencers. If you ask too soon, they will either ignore you or reject your proposal.Rushing might mean that youââ¬â¢ll have to start the process all over again and find someone else to endorse your book.Never send a mass request to a group of influencers. Youââ¬â¢ll waste you r time, and hurt your chances of ever building a relationship with them. Customization is key.Send the influencers a copy of your book along with a well-crafted message asking for the endorsement.Ideally, youââ¬â¢ll send them a physical copy. It doesnt have to be the final version, and it doesnt have to be perfect. It can be a printed PDF.That said, you must ensure that whatever you send to the influencer is professionally packaged. If sending a physical version of your book is not possible, you can send them the PDF or ebook, but youââ¬â¢ll have to ask in a way that stands out. You could achieve this by customizing your message in a unique way, creating a video specifically designed for them, or preceding your email with a handwritten note.Think outside the box! A video card or a note written on a balloon would be clever ways to stand out, too.Be succinct. Remember that time is a high-price commodity for influencers (for everyone!) so you dont want to make it a chore to under stand what youre asking.Start by expressing why you feel theyre the right person to endorse the book and why you respect them so much. Be sure to mention that youââ¬â¢re eager to make your readers aware of their work. Next, specify the length of the blurb youre seeking as well as by when you need it done. Dont make your deadline too far in the future so that its put in the back burner, but dont make it so soon that the influencer will immediately say no. I personally chose 3-4 weeks to collect the blurbs.Be prepared to negotiate an extended due date, and allow for extra time in your planning. When you share the blurb that you wrote, explain that youre just trying to make things easy for them.Express how much you appreciate their time and attention, and close with the promise to follow up in a week or two.Following Up for Book EndorsementsIf you dont hear back from the influencers, its easy to assume theyre not interested in writing the endorsement and be tempted to give up. Howeve r, its important to realize that they might have not received your message yet.Emails go to spam folders. Gatekeepers delete emails and toss out mail. You never know! When you follow up, try a different way to reach the person. If you used email first, follow up with a handwritten note or a message on social media. If you find out the name of the influencersââ¬â¢ gatekeepers, reach out to them directly. Build a relationship with them as well, and you will have a great chance of success. My rule of thumb is to follow up three times. If you dont hear from them, it might be time to move on.As you can see, with a well-written manuscript, proper planning, and a great dose of authenticity, its possible for you to get endorsements from top influencers in your field. The most important step is to take action. Its easy to be sidelined by fear of rejection, but if you think about it, the worst thing that can happen is that theyââ¬â¢ll say no. If youre confident in the quality of your book, you have nothing to fear. Take the first step today to gain powerful social proof and make your book a success!

kang hsi essays
kang hsi essays The Self Portrait of Kang-Hsi is a work unlike any other that a typical reader could expect to encounter. It is both educational and exciting, incorporating many elements such as morality, history, and wisdom, that when combined, stun the reader into admiration for one of Chinas greatest emperors. The Emperor Of China is a beautifully written masterpiece both on the part of the author Kang-Hsi and the editor Jonathan Spence. The book takes its readers into the 17th century China, presenting them with the Chinese way of life as well as the Chinese culture in general. The way in which Kang-Hsi presents his thoughts, victories, and defeats is spectacular to both the old and the young. Kang-Hsis self portrait allows the readers to psychologically enter the mind of the great emperor witnessing the true perspectives of his job, as well as evaluating how well he accomplished such an enormous task as ruling an empire for over sixty years. In the words of Kang-Hsi himself, his job was hard work, two words so simple, yet with such great meaning. Despite the hardships, Kang-Hsi was able to clearly define and describe his own function as the leader of his country, while performing all crucial tasks with unmatched excellence. It is clear to all that summarizing a job of an emperor is not an easy task, since this is the only job that has no limits and extends in all directions and all areas of a fairly large empire. Kang-Hsi was well aware of that and even pointed out, I have worked with unceasing diligence and intense watchfulness, never resting, never idle. (Spence, 170) Conceivably the reason for Kang-Hsis accomplishments understanding his role as well as carrying it out, were due to his high intellectual standpoint, as well as a virtuous heart. Kang-Hsi fought wars but knew when to be cruel as well ...

Real Reel Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Real Reel - Term Paper Example The sun was already high. The temperature had risen to a high 110 degrees. I was sweating profusely but I was determined to learn how to ride a bike on that day. I cannot give up just because of the heat or the exhaustion I was already feeling. I know my companions are equally tired but not even they can stop me from attaining my goal. Hallie, our neighbor and my best friend who was of the same age as I was, patiently took the responsibility of being my tutor. We were ten. She lent me her purple pink bike. Hallie has a brother who was seven years old at that time and I have a little sister who was eight and a half years old. As responsible brothers and sisters, we became their babysitters during the summer. Since they were not too young to play with us, Hallie and I decided to bring them along as she taught me how to ride a bike. Our siblings were ecstatic at the thought of playing outdoors. At first, the two younger ones enthusiastically cheered with Hallie as I tried to balance mys elf on the machine with two wheels. ââ¬Å"You can do it, Jordan.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s it, Jordan. Just try to balance yourselfâ⬠, Jon and Lauren cried, imitating Hallie. Every now and then, they would follow my friend and hold the bike for me as I try another attempt of driving it. ââ¬Å"You can do itâ⬠, was their never ending words of encouragement. ... Yet, learning how to ride the bike was really difficult for me. Thus, even if I did not want to stop my practice, I had to let the two kids ride the bike also to take their boredom and exasperation away. Since they did not know how to ride a bike too, Hallie and I exchanged turns in assisting them. In this task, I realized how difficult it has been for everyone to be holding the bike and running, holding a grip on the bike to keep me balanced as I try again and again to ride. This made me more determined and when I got back on the bike, I requested them not to assist me. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s see how I can learn on my ownâ⬠, I said not because I did not want their help but because I knew that I was beginning to burden them.. Nevertheless, my expectations that the task at hand was easy proved to be wrong. I hardly can balance myself on the bike contrary to how easy I perceived it to be. I fell numerous times, I incurred many scratches from the fall and I begun to feel ashamed of my self. Here I was, learning to do a simple task that I can hardly perfect. I am being taught by a girl when I was supposed to be the one teaching her. Suddenly, as if everything fell into place, I was able to ride without falling. Something like a light bulb in my head lit and I instinctively knew what to do in order to maintain my balance. ââ¬Å"I can ride the bike!â⬠I shouted as Hallie, Jon and Lauren came running towards me. I was reeling with excitement that I did not notice a white BMW coming my way. Being alerted by my friend, I did pop a wheelie and was able to safely get back on my track to where my friends were, jumping feom joy. Indeed, it was not just a celebration for me, being able
